Describe indoor and outdoor access separately
Photograph the route the person will actually use, including the approach to the first step and the space beyond the last landing. State whether any part is outdoors and show the nearby doors, gates or passages. If both an exterior entry and an internal staircase are difficult, make them separate items in the enquiry so a quote does not silently solve only half of the daily journey.
Elevator-Lift Systems explicitly offers stairlifts and identifies Hilton Head coverage. Ask it or another assessor to explain the proposed equipment for the actual setting, including weather exposure where relevant. Request a written maintenance and warranty explanation for that model. A photograph of an outdoor lift elsewhere is not enough to determine what can be installed on your own stairway.

The published straight-stairlift figure above comes from one provider’s product page, not an island market survey. The source does not itemize a complete fitted package. Ask for the rail, chair, installation, options and any separate preparation to be written into the proposal. If a different layout is required after the survey, have the company explain the revised scope before a final payment decision.
For a turning stair, request the full rail design and a clear explanation of where the user boards, passes the landing and exits. Ask what a deposit commits you to and when any custom work becomes nonrefundable. If a pre-owned unit is proposed, request the condition, inspected components and warranty in writing. None of these details can be settled by the lowest number in a search result.

Home Mobility Solutions identifies a Ridgeland base and explicitly advertises Hilton Head Island installation and a free in-home assessment. The 101 Mobility island pages are another enquiry route, but their wording includes Charleston references and the manufacturer names a Charleston-based Low Country dealer. We have not turned those regional references into an island office or an assured local technician schedule.
Ask each quoting business which team will attend and how it handles later island service visits. Confirm travel, diagnostic charges and the written warranty. Elevator-Lift Systems advertises a one-year parts and service warranty for installations; obtain the applicable agreement and its exclusions. If you hope to rent, get configuration-specific confirmation and collection terms from the responsible office before relying on a general rental statement.

The official Home Safety & Repair flyer describes an income-qualified town homeowner program, but the current landing page could not be retrieved during this review. The surviving application is marked revised in 2022. These documents are useful for identifying a town enquiry, not for declaring that applications, funding or stairlift purchases are currently approved. Confirm present intake directly before making financial plans.
The application lists repair categories and asks about private covenants or restrictions. If those issues may affect your property, gather the relevant documents and ask the town and installer who must approve the proposed work. Do not read an old application’s “other” box as confirmation that a stairlift is eligible. Ask whether an assessment, contractor selection or written authorization must precede any purchase.

For broader guidance, Beaufort County points to the Lowcountry Council of Governments’ aging and disability service. The state’s GetCareSC listing describes information and referral for Beaufort County and notes that general information does not require a program intake. Use that route to ask about current home-access resources and the correct agency for the person’s needs, rather than assuming a repair flyer is the only option.
If the person paying for the lift lives elsewhere, agree who will attend the assessment, who may approve a layout change and who receives the final documents. Arrange a handover that includes the actual user and anyone helping with daily operation. Keep the model, serial number, service contact and written terms at the home, and provide a copy to the relative coordinating future maintenance.
