Plan every level you need to reach
Benchmark’s Marin project examples include split-level stairs and rail parking beyond the main flight. Those examples are useful prompts, not designs to copy into a different home. For your San Rafael survey, list the rooms the rider needs each day and mark every change in level along the way. Explain which part is difficult now and whether another part may soon become difficult.
Ask the installer to show the boarding and exit positions in relation to nearby doors, furniture and walking aids. If a shorter flight is left untreated, have that limitation written down. A staged installation may suit a household, but its first stage should not be mistaken for full access. Request the cost and practical implications of the later stage before choosing where to start.
Benchmark Home Elevator · California MobilityCheck the rental package against the rider’s needs
An equipment category does not tell you which features a rental includes. Ask the seller to identify the seat, control, swivel and rail arrangement actually being offered, especially if reaching down or turning is difficult. If the assessed design needs an option outside the rental package, request a revised proposal instead of assuming it can be added after fitting.
Price a realistic range of durations. Put the first payment and any mandatory period next to the cost of extending, removing or buying the equipment. Find out who schedules removal and what happens if the household is away when collection is due. If rental no longer looks economical, compare it with a purchase covering the same route and service responsibilities, rather than simply comparing two headline amounts.
Lifeway MobilityUse the correct Marin Housing process
Marin Housing’s CalHome guidance describes assistance for lower-income owner-occupants within the county. Its published guidelines and FAQ discuss borrowing, interest and repayment conditions; this should not be described as free equipment. Ask the administrator to confirm the version applying to a new application, the household and property checks, and whether the stairlift can be included in the approved repair scope.
The program’s published sequence puts eligibility review and planning before final loan approval and construction. Keep the equipment quote flexible while those decisions are made. Ask when a contractor can be selected, when a deposit may be paid and what changes require another review. A business willing to install in San Rafael cannot decide eligibility for the housing program or guarantee a place in its funding queue.

Marin CIL lists home modifications, assistive technology and housing support among its services. A useful first conversation describes what the person cannot comfortably do at home and what help is already available. Mention any difficulty at the bathroom, doorway or transfer point as well as the stairs. Ask whether a broader assessment would make the planned purchase more useful.
Keep separate records of the advice, the proposed installation and any funding application. If someone recommends a change, ask who will specify it, whether it belongs in the contractor’s scope and whether it affects the schedule. For a rented or shared property, identify the person who must authorize work early. Support with planning is valuable even when a particular equipment purchase is not funded.
Marin Center for Independent Living ↗Confirm regional visits and long-term service
Before arranging transport to a demonstration, obtain a confirmed appointment address. Lifeway’s current branch information points to San Jose while some city-page text still names Union City. Benchmark’s contact page also contains different Napa addresses. These are reasons to clarify the visit directly, rather than treating an address copied from a search result as a guaranteed showroom destination.
For the quote itself, ask where service is dispatched from, whether travel is chargeable and who handles equipment bought elsewhere. Have the business distinguish parts warranty, labor, maintenance and emergency attendance. At installation, request operating instructions and a service contact for the named model. Keep a household plan for an interruption, especially when the lift is the rider’s only practical route to an essential room.
